- Most of the 130+ species live in sub-Saharan Africa, with 59 species existing only in Madagascar
- Vary in size from 2” to 24”
- Tongues may be longer than body length
- Independent, swivelling eyes give almost 360-degree vision. Eyes can focus on different things at same time. Don’t have outer or middle ear and seem to be deaf
- Do not change colors to camouflage but instead in response to temperature, light and mood
- Most have long, prehensile tails
- Move slowly with rocking motion, grasping branches with feet and tail
- Most lay eggs which remain buried for up to 9 months before hatching
- Some species can lay over 100 eggs per clutch
- Newborns surprisingly independent as parents have moved away from clutch before hatching
- Eat locusts, crickets, and other insects
- Males typically more ornamented than females
