Diego Rivera was born on December 8, 1886 in Guanajuato, Mexico. His parents, both school teachers, quickly recognized his artistic talent. Diego was drawing by age two and his father set up a studio for him before he could even read. At age ten he decided to become an artist and a year later began to attend evening courses at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. Rivera left for Spain in 1907 to study with Chicharro. Between 1908 and 1910, he traveled throughout Europe and settled in Paris in 1911 where he was influenced by post-impressionists. Here he took up cubism and become part of the Parisian art world. After a fourteen year absence from Mexico, Rivera returned home and participated in what we now know as the Mexican Renaissance. He became prominent in the country's revival of mural painting. Believing art should serve working people, he concentrated on large frescoes portraying the history and social problems of Mexico. He painted them on the walls of public buildings, including the National Palace and the Palace of Cortes. In 1929 he married artist Frida Kahlo, and their tempestuous marriage became as famous as their art. In the 1930s and '40s Rivera worked in the US and Mexico, where many of his paintings drew controversy. His 1933 mural for RCA in New York included the likeness of Russian Bolshevik founder Nikolai Lenin, resulting in its destruction in 1934, and a 1948 painting in Mexico that included the words "God does not exist" was covered and held from view for nine years. Rivera's talent for historical murals and his tributes to folk traditions made him one of the most influential artists in the Americas and Mexico's foremost 20th century painter. Rivera died in 1957 in Mexico City.
