Arthur Wellesley was a leading 19th century Anglo-Irish military and political figure. Born in Dublin in 1769, he was an unremarkable student at Eton but found his calling when he joined the army in 1787. After achieving military success, he returned to England, was knighted and became a member of parliament. His political career came to an end in 1808, when he assumed control of the British, Portuguese and Spanish forces in the Peninsular War, forcing the occupying French to withdraw. When Napoleon abdicated in 1814, Wellesley returned home a hero and was created duke of Wellington. When Napoleon returned, Wellington became commander of the allied armies, and with the help of Prussian forces defeated him at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In 1827, Wellesley became commander in chief of the British army and in 1828 reluctantly accepted the post of prime minister, which he held until 1830 and then again briefly in 1834. As prime minister, he believed in strong, authoritative government and an isolationist policy. His opposition to parliamentary reform made him unpopular, and he earned the nickname the “Iron Duke” when he erected iron shutters on the windows of his London home, Apsley House, to prevent them being smashed by angry crowds. Wellesley continued as one of the leading figures in the House of Lords until his retirement in 1846 and remained Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his death in 1852.
