Dart Frog Facts:
- Also called poison dart frog.
- Found in rainforests of Central and South America.
- Live in areas of high humidity with dense vegetation and water.
- Noted for their kaleidoscopic colors. Bright colors warn potential predators to stay away.
- Considered the most poisonous animal on earth. The golden poison frog contains enough poison to kill 20,000 mice or 10 adult humans. Do not manufacture toxins. Toxins come from alkaloid-rich ants which they ingest.
- Also feed upon small insects, termites, worms, spiders and centipedes.
- Very small. Range in size from 1-6 centimeters.
- Have no natural predators.
- Most reproduce through oviparity. Female lays infertile eggs and male fertilizes them externally, similar to fish.
- Because females are extremely territorial and competitive, a parent (usually the male) guards the eggs in order to prevent a rival female from devouring them.
- In captivity, have lifespan of 5-12 years.
- Their toxins important in biomedical research. Used in painkillers. Studied to help treat neurological and muscular disorders.
