  • A few troops live wild in Florida’s Silver River State Park. Here, tour boat operator known locally as "Colonel Tooey" released them to enhance his "Jungle Cruise" ride in 1938.
  • Can adapt to many habitats, and some live in human communities. This is most common in India, where Hindus regard them as sacred and leave them undisturbed.
  • Have widest geographic range of any nonhuman primate.
  • 18-25” tall; tail 8-13”; 9-27 lbs.
  • Diet includes roots, fruit, seeds, bark, insects and small animals.
  • Good climbers but spend most of time on ground.
  • Live in active, noisy troops with up to 200 members. Males dominant but do not remain with troop permanently and replaced every few years. Females lead communities and split off to form new groups when troop becomes too large.
  • Females usually produce one young each year, after gestation of 135-194 days.
  • Babies always born at night. Mothers nurse young for 7-14 months. Raised by mother within very social environment of troop.
  • Enjoy being in water and good swimmers.
  • Lifespan in wild no more than 15 years. May live up to 30 years in captivity.
  • Closest relative to humans. Share common ancestors 25 million years ago and 93% of DNA.
  • Used extensively in medical and biological research. Rhesus antigens found in their blood enabled doctors to identify human blood groups in 1940. Used in experiments on maternal deprivation carried out in 1950s. In 2000, became first cloned primate with birth of Tetra. Work on genome completed in 2007, making them second non-human primate to have genome sequenced.
